Foreign Art Collection
The Art Museum of Estonia’s Kadriorg Art Museum has the largest collection of foreign art in Estonia. The museum collection, which got its start in 1919, bears the stamp of Estonia’s complicated history. Due to political events, the museum has acquired old collections that were left when their owners disappeared, art from churches, works handed over by government agencies and museums, gifts from private collectors and art bought for the museum.
The Kadriorg Art Museum’s collections of Netherlandish, Russian and Italian paintings have attracted the most attention. Works from the Kadriorg Art Museum’s collections have been exhibited at several European museums and exhibition halls. The study and introduction of the local cultural legacy in the international context is one of the priorities of the Kadriorg Art Museum.
