The book accompanies the exhibitions “Lux Aeterna. Italian Art from Lithuanian and Estonian Collections” at the Kadriorg Art Museum (27.09.2014–15.03.2015) and “Lux Aeterna. Italian Art from Johannes Mikkel’s Collection” at the Mikkel Museum (27.09.2014–01.03.2015). Italy, which is the heart of the antique legacy and Christian cultural history, has enchanted and inspired artists for centuries. Based on antique traditions that were cemented in Renaissance art, Italy was the place where the ideals of beauty and rules of composition developed that reigned throughout Europe until the end of the 19th century. The book deals with the representation of Italian art in Baltic museums and private collections, the development of the collections and their current meaning in the region’s museum landscape.
