Technical research helps the conservators determine the condition of the works of art and to collect information on the dating, attribution and technical structure of the works.

The Conservation Department at the Art Museum of Estonia uses the following techniques: examinations with various electromagnetic radiation, ultraviolet and infrared examinations, micro- and macro-examination of the objects, and the analysis of the composition of substances. If necessary, x-rays, dendrochronological research and analyses of pigments and binders are commissioned from cooperation partners (e.g. the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology).
