Open workshop: “Seize the Day”
Open workshop for children and families: “Seize the Day” or painting milk cartons
Inspired by Erki Kasemets’s installation LIFE-FILE, a workshop will be held in the Kumu Atrium in which ordinary milk cartons will be transformed into works of art. Erki Kasemets’s art is characterised by a frugal mindset: he makes use of any materials at hand, as well as biological matter. The processual work that best characterises the interconnectedness of his creative career and the course of his life is LIFE-FILE (1989–2024): it consists of empty milk cartons that feature painted images, dates or texts and signify certain days in the artist’s life. LIFE-FILE is one of the most remarkable pieces of “trash art” in Estonian contemporary art history. Its title refers to the time of its creation, the heyday of computerisation, creating associations with different carriers and bodies of data, and to collecting and storing information in a broader sense.
In the workshop Seize the Day milk cartons will be used as the base materials to record things experienced and seen on Kumu’s birthday. Participants can use paint or apply texts or design their cartons in whatever ways they wish.
