Curators’ Tour of the Exhibition Anna-Stina Treumund: How to Recognise a Lesbian?

Curators Magdaleena Maasik and Piret Karro-Arrak will lead a guided tour in English of the exhibition Anna-Stina Treumund: How to Recognise a Lesbian?. The Curators’ Tour will provide an insight into the largest-ever exhibition of Anna-Stina Treumund’s (1982–2017) works, mapping her activities as a photographer, a contemporary artist and an activist.
Anna-Stina Treumund was feminist artist and activist, and the first in Estonia to clearly integrate her artist’s position with the experience of being a lesbian. Her art projects that dealt with comparatively radical topics, as well as her activism, e.g. organising the queer-feminist culture festival LadyFest Tallinn for many years, were of groundbreaking importance for the Estonian art scene and the feminist movement.

The Curator’s Tour introduces the artist’s creative journey, from exploring themes of identity, as well as complex interpersonal and familial relationships at the Tartu Art College to establishing herself as a queer activist while studying at the Estonian Academy of Arts. We will discuss her most important exhibitions, such as You, Me and Everyone We Don’t Know (2010) and M’s Wet Dream (2016), which explored the representation of lesbians, female sexuality and criticism of patriarchy.
The curators will also provide insight into the dialogues between Treumund and the artists who influenced her art the most, such as Marju Mutsu and Kai Kaljo, and between the oeuvre of the young artists Janina Sabaliauskaitė from Lithuania and Elo Vahtrik and Maria Izabella Lehtsaar from Estonia, who continue exploring queer and feminist topics in their art practices.

This event is a part of the public programme of the exhibition Anna-Stina Treumund: How to Recognise a Lesbian?.

Participation is free of charge with an annual pass to the Art Museum of Estonia.
