Dance of Death in Five Languages
In the Chapel of Saint Anthony of the Niguliste Museum, visitors can hear the text of the Lübeck master Bernt Notke’s Dance of Death in five languages every day at 1 pm. The text, which originated in the Netherlands, is played in the original Low German and also in Estonian, Russian, English and German.
The large-scale and extremely skilfully completed painting from the workshop of the Lübeck master Bernt Notke, made at the end of the 15th century, is the only remaining medieval Dance of Death on canvas in the whole world. Through images and text, it invites viewers to contemplate the futility of life.
Participation with a museum ticket.
