Discussion “Quo Vadis, Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence?”
As a part of the opening programme of Kumu’s new contemporary art exhibition Triumph of Galatea: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, a panel discussion will take place featuring the exhibited artists Marge Monko and Sten Saarits from Estonia, Jan Zuiderveld from the Netherlands, and Jens Settergren from Denmark. The discussion will be moderated by the technology philosopher Oliver Laas. The panel discussion will be held in English.
If an “artificial intelligence (AI) winter” is the drying up of funding and research interest in the field, then at present we are still in the midst of a hot summer. Unlike previous cycles of hype, the current one is characterised by progress in AI creativity, affecting above all creative and knowledge workers. The discussion will explore the impact of generative AI on artistic practice, art and visual culture more broadly. When is a tool autonomous enough to be considered a (co-)author? How should we understand the claim that “AI democratises art”? What new creative possibilities does generative AI open up for artists? And what do artists consider to be the greatest moral and social challenges posed by generative AI?
The event is a part of the public programme of the exhibition Triumph of Galatea: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and Kumu’s 20th anniversary programme.
With a title that references the myth of Pygmalion, the international group exhibition Triumph of Galatea: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence examines the transformation and development of human experience in culture and society in relation to the onslaught of new technologies.
Participation is free of charge with an annual pass to the Art Museum of Estonia.
