Documentary Screenings: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
As a part of the finissage of Kumu’s Great Hall exhibition “History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe”, two short documentary films will be screened in Kumu Education Centre’s auditorium. The films focus on the life and artistic practice of two iconic Mexican artists: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
Both films will screen in Spanish with English subtitles.
At 16:00 film “Frida Kahlo: between love and pleasure” (Frida Kahlo: entre el dolor y el Placer).
Frida Kahlo, one of the most famous Mexican painters worldwide, is the author of works that for many represent Mexican identity and popular art. Her paintings express the strong emotions she experienced, including pain and sorrow. This documentary narrates the life of the artist with her husband, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, in the United States and Europe. The film is part of the special series “Great Figures of Mexican Art” made by Canal 22 of public broadcasting (Channel 22) to portray the lives of famous Mexican artists.
Director: Gabriel Santander
The film was first screened in 2015 in Canal 22 México.

At 17:00 film “Diego Rivera: an Artist at Crossroads” (Diego Rivera, un artista en la encrucijada).
Diego Rivera was a prominent Mexican muralist, known for depicting works of social content in public buildings. This documentary reviews the life and work of one of the most world-famous Mexican painters through interviews with the artist’s daughter, art researchers, and directors of Mexican museums. This documentary is part of the special series “Great Figures of Mexican Art” made by Canal 22 of public broadcasting (Channel 22) to portray the lives of famous Mexican artists.
Director: Diego López Rivera
The film was first screened in 2014 in Canal 22 México.
Duration: 53 minutes
The event is supported by The Embassy of Mexico.
This event is a part of the public programme of the exhibition “History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe”. This is the first time that Latin American art has been exhibited on such a large scale in Estonia. This has been made possible through collaboration with The Phoebus Foundation in Antwerp, which owns one of the largest collections of Latin American art in Europe. The exhibition features art from two eras: the Spanish Colonial period from the 17th to the 19th century, and the modernist art of the 20th century from Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela.
