English tour: Johannes Mikkel and his art collection
Johannes Mikkel (1907–2006) was one of the most important Estonian art collectors. His extensive collection of more than 600 objects of early Western European painting and printmaking, and European, Russian and Oriental ceramics was assembled in Soviet Estonia at a time when there was no public art market and collecting activities were concealed rather than exhibited. Encouraged by an interest in the old and the precious, aided by contacts made while working in trade and good business instincts, Johannes Mikkel was able to build up an outstanding art collection that includes examples of renowned artists and art movements from the late 15th century to the 20th century, as well as the historical memory captured through the stories associated with these objects.
The tour is led by the art historian Greta Koppel.
On the first Wednesday of every month, there is an English-language tour of the Kadriorg Art Museum or the Mikkel Museum. Follow our website and social media!
