On December 14th at 6 PM, Estonian Sinfonietta’s Christmas concert at the Niguliste Museum will once again bring listeners wonderful music to mark the beginning of the Christmas time. This year’s concert will be a little more special than usual, as Kristi Mühling on the Estonian traditional instrument kannel and Barbro Wendt on the Åland traditional instrument nyckelharpa will join the Estonian Sinfonietta Soloists, treating the audience to Estonian-Swedish, Swedish, and Åland tunes in addition to works based on folk tunes by Estonian composers.

The concert will feature the Estonian premiere of Malle Maltis’s work “Stories of Peace and Light,” which will have its World premiere a week earlier, on December 7th at St. Göran’s Church in Mariehamn.
The composer writes about her work: “Stories of Peace and Light” is a collection of songs inspired by Finnish-Swedish and Åland folk tunes, dances, and ballads.
The music has a unique sound thanks to the ensemble, which includes the Estonian chromatic kannel, nyckelharpa, string quintet, and percussion instruments.
“Stories of Peace and Light” will be premiered during the dark days before Christmas, when there is a lack of light here in the Nordic countries, just as there is a lack of peace in the world today.”

The concert is organized in cooperation with the Åland Cultural Association Katrina.

“Music has always been important in my life.
Got my first Nyckelharpa in 1980 and fell immediately in love with the instrument! Folk music and old folk songs gets to my heart.”
