Hortus Musicus “Love and Enjoy!”

The autumn season of the Hortus Musicus ensemble at Kadriorg Palace consists of three concerts, all of which are inspired in one way or another by the exhibition “The Garden of Delights” currently on display at the Art Museum.

The Hortuse Musicus trio of male singers – tenor Anto Õnnis, baritone Tõnis Kaumann and bass Riho Ridbeck – brings listeners a diverse selection of vocal music masterpieces by English, Italian and French composers, which mainly talk about love, but also about food, drink and other pleasures.

The trio performs both mellow and cheerful, finely textured à cappella pieces by the 17th and 18th century French composers Boismortier, Deon and Charpentier, including the favorite lullaby of French children “Do, do, l’enfant, do”.

John Dowland’s (1563 – 1626) “Time stands still” gently touches the strings of the soul. As a contrast, the musical language of Claudio Monteverdi’s (1567 – 1643) songs reflects the complexity of the soul’s struggles in love, sometimes becoming painfully piercing, even frantic, in extreme outbursts of emotion, then calming down again into moving harmony.

From the rich songwriting of Henry Purcell (c 1659 – 1695), the program features this time also more mischievous pieces.

Beloved instrumental pieces will be heard between the songs, including Jean-Philippe Rameau’s wordless rhetorical masterpiece “L’Entretien des Muses” (The Conversation of the Muses), performed by Ene Nael on harpsichord. Also, Imre Eenmaa on viola da gamba and Robert Staak on lute will perform most sensuous pieces by Dowland.

The concert is held in collaboration with the Kadriorg Art Museum. Tickets on sale at the Piletikeskus and on site before the start.

Please notice, the permanents exhibitions and museum is closed. Doors open 30 minutes before the start of the event.
