Rhodes-Reval cultural events in Tallinn offer an opportunity to experience Greek music and culture, centered around the island of Rhodes with its rich cultural heritage and powerful nature. As the main event, the work “Katharsis” by Greek composer Savvas Karantzias, who resides on Rhodes, will be presented to the Estonian audience for the first time. With his work “Katharsis” (the Greek word ‘’κάθαρσις’’ means “purification”) the composer refers to the experience of release and relief of strong emotions that previously were repressed and that this extreme emotional state can result in the renewal and restoration of mind and body.
Tõnu Kaljuste has said: “”Katharsis” is Savvas Karantzias’ meditation on the memory image he experienced while listening to the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir perform Estonian music. The main sources of inspiration are the works of Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis.”
The piece is dedicated to Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and Tõnu Kaljuste.
The concert is organised by Festival European Polyphony.
Savvas Karantzias has written numerous works for orchestra, choir, chamber music. His works have been performed in different countries, including Greece, France, the USA, Australia etc. Before the concert, on the same day,
November 23, at 5pm, there will be a free of charge photo tour at Kloostri Ait. Their series of the French photographers Peggy Herbeau and Christophe Fillieule refer to the historic influences and melting points of Rhodes, which is at crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This has given the island many different identities, cultures, architectures, and languages over its long history. The exhibition will be open at Kloostri Ait from November 11 to 29, 2024.
Rhodos-Reval is a multidisciplinary event that celebrates the strong cultural and artistic links between France, Greece, and Estonia. Its aim is to promote exchanges between cultures, audiences, and disciplines. The events are produced in collaboration between the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and the founders of the Festival European Polyphony, Arts Spontanés association, based in Paris, and the Greek association Ars Artis, based in Rhodes.
