Köler and the Art of Yarn. Knitting Saturdays at the Kadriorg Art Museum 02/11/2024 | 12:00

Would you like to learn how to turn your impressions of art, nature or travel into knitting patterns, and craft them into warming socks for yourself or a loved one? At the Knitting Saturdays at the Kadriorg Art Museum, you’ll learn tips and tricks for doing just that.

On Saturdays: 02.11, 09.11, 23.11, 07.12 from 12.00 to 14.15
The programme will be held in Estonian.

The actress Kersti Heinloo, a knitting and craft enthusiast, will host knitting workshops on Saturdays in November. The participants will learn to design and create knitwear inspired by the exhibition From Mittens to Köler: The Birth of the Museum’s Collection, currently on display at the museum.

The programme:

• 2 November – a tour of the exhibition From Mittens to Köler: The Birth of the Museum’s Collection, guided by an art historian. We gather inspiration, take pictures of the most interesting objects, are introduced to basic pattern-making principles, and learn useful tips from Kersti Heinloo.
• 9 November – a knitting session at the museum, where we finalise our own patterns and start knitting.
• 16 November – there will be no meeting at the museum; we continue work at home.
• 23 November – a knitting session at the museum, where we knit together, chat about art and share our autumn thoughts. Those who wish can visit the exhibition and the permanent collection of the Kadriorg Art Museum.
• 30 November – there will be no meeting at the museum; we continue work at home.
• 7 December – a knitting session at the museum where we finish our socks and take photos of our completed work alongside the exhibits that served as models and inspiration for the knitwork.

The workshops are suitable for craft enthusiasts who know the basic sock knitting techniques and skills (casting on, knitting a heel etc.), or are willing to learn them independently in parallel with the workshops.

The tickets are available at Fienta and the Kadriorg Art Museum.

The participation fee includes a tour of the exhibition on 2 November, instructions in pattern making and the knitting process, admission to the museum at each Knitting Saturday session at the Kadriorg Art Museum, and tea breaks.

The exhibition From Mittens to Köler: The Birth of the Museum’s Collection explores the history of the collection of the Art Museum of Estonia from its foundation in 1919 until World War II. At that time, the collection included not only works of art but also farm objects, traditional handicrafts and other cultural artefacts.
