Kumu Documentary 20. Premiere: KARP
Dir Keiti Väliste
Estonia 2026, 59 min
In Estonian, with English subtitles
The architect Raine Karp has designed some of the most monumental buildings in Estonia. The film reflects on the life mathematics of Raine and takes viewers on a journey through the architect’s world of ideas, space and creation.
It seems strange that the creator of such masterpieces as the Tallinn City Hall, the Estonian National Library, the Tallinn Post Office and nearly three hundred other buildings does not consider himself an artist, but rather an engineer, and sees his work as a series of mathematical operations.
The cultural and architectural experts Karen Jagodin, Miia Masso, Mait Väljas and Tiit Nurklik explore his dominant urban structures and offer different perspectives. The film presents visual and spatial experiences both from the present and from Karp’s personal archive of videos and photographs, which take us on a journey through time.
The film is directed by Keiti Väliste, with cinematography by Mattias Veermets, montage by Johanna Maria Vilgats, editing by Kai Väärtnõu, sound design by Kauri Lemberg, music by Markus Robam, graphic design by Kaspar Sellin, and production by Johanna Maria Tamm (Paulson) and Stellar Film.
The film night is being organised in cooperation with Kumu Documentary and Stellar Film.
