Pillars of Watercolour Painting

The course on the foundations of watercolour painting consists of six sessions and offers insights into the enchanting world of watercolours. Every session contains practical activities: from getting acquainted with the materials to practising the most widespread painting techniques.
The goal of the course is to guide participants in applying this fascinating technique and to support them on their creative path by offering knowledge of related materials and the most widely used painting techniques. The purpose of the sessions is to increase the participants’ confidence in working with watercolours and to offer experiences they can use to complement their own painting practices.

02.02, 09.02, 23.02, 02.03, 09.03, 16.03 I 17.00–20.00

The first session provides an introduction to watercolour papers and brushes, the second session looks at the colour wheel and watercolours, and the third meeting introduces different auxiliary tools. The fourth meeting is devoted to wet watercolour techniques, the fifth to dry techniques and the sixth to discovering alternative techniques.
Liisi Tani is a painter who graduated from the Pallas University of Applied Sciences and the Estonian Academy of Arts. She has been a member of the Estonian Association of Watercolour Painters since 2015. Tani has devoted her work to watercolour collage-mosaics: this enables her to have a particularly exciting approach to colour and composition, as the fitting together and combining of cut painting surfaces allows her to deal with colour in a broader sense. According to the artist, constant self-improvement is of central value to, and a crucial part of, the creative process. Self-improvement means, among other things, acquainting oneself with the qualities of paints and materials, particularly those of watercolour paper. Her personal goal is to share the practice of the wonderful technique of watercolour. Since 2019 she has been teaching watercolour on a weekly basis at her watercolour studio, for nearly as long at the Tallinn Folk High School and once a month at the Tartu Folk High School.
