The Saint Ephraim Male Choir from Budapest

The St Ephraim Male Choir, which has been performing in Budapest for over 20 years, is one of Hungary’s most popular vocal ensembles. The ensemble’s name originates from Syrian ascetic Saint Ephraim (306-373), also known as the bearer of the Holy Spirit because of his poetry and musicality. As the name suggests, the ensemble’s repertoire includes music with Byzantine roots, as well as songs from medieval Hungary and the works of the great Hungarian composers Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. The unique sound composition of the eight-member ensemble has inspired contemporary composers to write for them. The singers also compose their own music and make arrangements for the ensemble. They often use accompanying instruments such as trumpet, guitar or percussion.

Since 2002, the octet has released 18 albums with a varied repertoire and toured all over Europe, as well as in Africa, India and South America.

In cooperation with Liszt Institute.
