Workshop: Flavours of Mexico and the Day of the Dead
Embark on a journey through Mexico’s rich culture, traditions, history and cuisine!
Kumu is celebrating the Day of the Dead with a hands-on workshop focusing on the region’s indigenous ingredients, such as corn, chili peppers and cacao. In the workshop, we will discover iconic Mexican flavours and prepare corn tortillas from scratch using masa (maize dough). The workshop is led by Lisseth Pedroza Fuentes
We will explore the spiritual significance of food offerings on Day of the Dead altars, and learn about traditional offerings, such as pan de muerto, a sweet bun covered in sesame seeds, poppy seeds or sugar, and red and green mole, a labour-intensive traditional Mexican sauce made from a blend of chili peppers, spices, nuts, seeds and sometimes chocolate.
The workshop is led by Lisseth Pedroza Fuentes, a distinguished Mexican archaeologist with a master’s degree in Mesoamerican studies. Her expertise in ancient Mexican culinary practices adds a fascinating historical dimension to the exploration.
The workshop will be conducted in English. Workshop participants will receive ticket discounts to visit Kumu’s exhibitions on the same day. Due to space restrictions and the format of the workshop, spots and tickets are limited.
This event is a part of the public programme of the exhibition “History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe”. This is the first time that Latin American art has been exhibited on such a large scale in Estonia. This has been made possible through collaboration with The Phoebus Foundation in Antwerp, which owns one of the largest collections of Latin American art in Europe. The exhibition features art from two eras: the Spanish Colonial period from the 17th to the 19th century, and the modernist art of the 20th century from Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela.
