Film screening: Quantification Trilogy

On Thursday, 25 November, at 6 pm, a film screening of Quantification Trilogy will take place in the Kumu auditorium. The event is part of the public programme of the exhibition Jeremy Shaw. Phase Shifting Index.

The night’s programme consists of three para-fictional short films by Shaw:

Quickeners, 2014
Liminals, 2017
I Can See Forever, 2018

The works are set in the future and explore how marginalised societies confront life after a scientific discovery has mapped and determined all of the parameters of transcendental spiritual experience. This is known as “The Quantification.” Employing the aesthetics and outmoded media of the 20th century to depict the future, Shaw’s alchemical combination of cinema verité, ethnographic film, conceptual art, and music video invites the viewer to suspend their disbelief, and provides a series of critical perspectives on systems of power. The Quantification Trilogy examines fringe culture, theories of evolution, virtual reality, neurotheology, esotericism, dance, the representation of the sublime, and the notion of transcendence itself.

Jeremy Shaw (1977) is one of the most influential and intriguing artists in the contemporary visual culture. A Canadian artist based in Berlin, Shaw works with the human desire to escape reality. He is interested in cultural and scientific practices that seek to map transcendental experiences and altered states of mind, such as rituals, ecstasy, catharsis and neurosciences.

Phase Shifting Index is Shaw’s most recent and largest project, was created for his solo exhibition in the Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2020. The renowned art magazine Frieze named it among the top 10 exhibitions in Europe in 2020.

Phase Shifting Index is a seven-screen video, sound and light installation that takes us to a distant future. Shaw has created seven fictional futuristic sub-cultures that express their world views in ecstatic choreographed bodily movements. The artist merges elements from documentaries, conceptual art, music videos and scientific research with the aesthetics of past recording technology to offer a powerful vision of the future.

Note! The event is open to people who have recovered from COVID-19 or those who have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
