In the Style of Eduard Wiiralt
The entertainment tour “In the Style of…” combines a visit to the exhibition “Identity Landscapes” with a creative workshop at Kumu Art Studios. The exhibition draws inspiration from both Estonian art history and the contribution of graphic artist Eduard Wiiralt to the best of Estonian graphic arts. The program is well suited for a group of friends, birthday parties, or a work collective.
First alongside the program facilitator the group visits the Kumu permanent exhibition “Identity Landscapes. Estonian Art 1700–1945”, which introduces older local art against the backdrop of Estonia’s multi-ethnic history, where Baltic German, Russian, and Estonian traditions intertwine. The focus is on the role of art in society and its impact on the self-image of different communities. The exhibition highlights the connections between Baltic German and Estonian visual culture, the meaning of images in the young Estonian nation-state, dreams of modern life, the voice of female artists, the art of the silent era and wartime, and the story of the formation of local identity landscapes. Alongside high art, the influence of amateurs, education, consumer graphics and design on the creation of visual identity is explored.
Special attention is paid to the work of the versatile artist and undisputed master of graphic art Eduard Wiiralt. Through Wiiralt’s works, the specifics of printmaking are revealed and techniques that entail the mastery of visual art, physics and chemistry, are introduced.
Inspired by the exhibition, participants can try their hand at printmaking with drypoint, which is perfect for first-time graphic enthusiasts and also experienced printmakers. Please let us know if you are interested in other relief and intaglio printing techniques.
