In the Style of Mei Sisters
The entertainment tour “In the Style of…” combines a visit to the exhibition “The Mei Sisters: Avant-Garde and the Everyday Life” with a creative workshop at Kumu Art Studios. The program is well suited for a group of friends, birthday parties, or a work collective.
First, you will visit the exhibition with the program facilitator, which presents the work of sisters Kristine, Lydia, and Natalie Mei. The Mei sisters are a unique sisterhood in Estonian art history, all of whom deserve a place among the classics of Estonian modernism. The exhibition features drawings, watercolors, small sculptures, and collages, as well as consumer items and unique, pseudonymously and hand-made booklets. The works reflect the contemporary lives of the sister artists directly, honestly, and often with a hint of humor.
Lydia Mei is known as a masterful and productive watercolorist who dedicated herself to still life, among other motifs. Her compositions encourage experimentation and bringing together perhaps unexpected combinations in a picture. Natalie Mei’s unique character creation allows for a similar unexpected and avant-garde approach.
Inspired by the works seen at the exhibition, participants can try their hand at watercolor techniques and create a work that combines a classical sense of composition with a humorous approach to the subject matter at hand.
