International Music Day. Elle-Riin Volmer ja Piret Mikalai (piano)
International Music Day was initiated in 1975. The day is celebrated worldwide on 1 October. Since 2013, under the leadership of the Estonian Music Council, live music has been heard across Estonia on 1 October.
Piret Mikalai began her piano studies in 2004 at Tallinn Music High School, where she studied in the piano class of Ira Floss. From 2016, she continued her studies in piano at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, under the guidance of Professors Peep Lassmann and Mihkel Poll. Following her Bachelor’s studies, she spent one year as an exchange student at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. In 2023, she completed her Master’s degree at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. She subsequently continued her studies in the Master’s programme in Chamber Music at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, under the guidance of Professor Marje Lohuaru. Piret has participated in numerous international and national competitions. She was awarded the Lilian Semper Scholarship in 2018 and 2022, the Yamaha Scholarship in 2020, and the Helmi Valtman Scholarship. She has performed on numerous concert stages and has appeared as a soloist with the Narva City Orchestra, the Tallinn Music High School Symphony Orchestra, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Symphony Orchestra, and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO).
Elle-Riin Volmer has given numerous solo recitals and concerts as a pianist in string-and-piano ensembles, both in Estonia and Denmark. She has also participated in competitions and festivals in Italy, Spain, and Germany. Elle-Riin began her piano studies at Tallinn Music High School and completed her Bachelor’s degree at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in the piano class of Professor Ivari Ilja. She obtained her Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, where she studied under Professor Søren Rastogi and Martin Lysholm Jepsen. In 2022, she completed the academy’s Soloist Diploma programme. She has performed as a soloist with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra, and Tallinn Music High School Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of conductors Arvo Volmer, Risto Joost, and Jüri Alperten. Since 2022, Elle-Riin has been a lecturer at Tallinn Music and Ballet School.
