Introduction by the director Jan Louter and architect Veronika Valk-Siska

Under Tomorrow’s Sky follows the renowned architect Winy Maas, the co-founder of MVRDV, whose work argues for transforming cities with “high rises on a human scale,” stacked structural volumes with open spaces and greenery around them that feel like vertical villages.

This inspiring documentary shows Maas’s influence on contemporary architecture and examines how his designs offer innovative solutions for the cities of the future.

The director Jan Louter travels with Maas to Korea and China, among other places, and visits the construction sites of the geologically inspired Valley block of flats, located in Amsterdam Zuidas, and the first publicly accessible art depot in the world, the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam: both buildings made headlines around the world long before they opened.

Winy Maas: “When one realizes that the overall world population will have grown by 5 billion people by 2050 and that most of these people will be living in cities, we will have to go up in the sky and design innovative types of high-rise buildings, where people can live and work in pleasant conditions.”

“There will be gardens, squares, day care centres, cafés and workspaces at a height of 100 or 150 meters. This is what future urban town-planning should look like. It is my dream to witness that happen.”

We thank Jan Louter
