The lecture of Ann M. Roberts. The Invention of the Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy
The lecture by Ann M. Roberts, the most renowned researcher of the Master of the Legend of St Lucy, will review the process by which the body of work associated with the master was assembled, beginning in the early 20th century
The Altarpiece of the Virgin Mary of the Brotherhood of the Black Heads by the Master of the Saint Lucy Legend is one of the masterpieces of the Niguliste Museum. The altarpiece was commissioned by the Great Guild and the Brotherhood of the Black Heads and reached Tallinn in 1493.
Among the topics to be raised are:
- The development of the oeuvre;
- The criteria by which attributions have been made and the problems of connoisseurship;
- The challenges and opportunities offered by technical studies of works of art associated with this style.
The goal is to identify and raise key questions pertinent to the study of this artist which may be useful to the research surrounding the Altarpiece of the Saint Mary in the Niguliste Museum in Tallinn.

Ann M. Roberts is probably the world’s most renowned researcher of the Master of the Legend of St Lucy. Her dissertation, defended at the University of Pennsylvania in 1981, was groundbreaking. She later published additional articles on the Master of the Legend of St Lucy and has been the editor of the well-known book Janson’s History of Art. Special attention has been given by Ann M. Roberts to the late medieval history of women, nunneries and especially to Mary of Burgundy.
