Kumu Art Museum

Kumu is the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia, as well as one of the largest and most monumental exhibition venues in the country. The museum provides a survey of the various time periods of Estonian art: from the Academic Style to Modernism, from Soviet Pop Art to contemporary art. The modern architecture of the building is an attraction in its own right.

Kadriorg Art Museum

The Kadriorg Art Museum is the only museum in Estonia dedicated to early European and Russian art. Interpreting the art of old masters is also the focus of its exhibitions and educational programmes. The museum is located in Kadriorg, in the Baroque palace built for the Russian tsar Peter the Great.

Theme event

The permanent displays of the Kadriorg Art Museum offer an excellent opportunity to explore the diverse roles women have played in the history of art. A lecture combined with a tour focuses on the remarkable lives and works of women artists from the 17th to the 19th centuries, examining the opportunities and limitations they faced.

We will also look at how women have been depicted in works of art and explore the roles, meanings and ideals attributed to them in different periods.

In addition, we will consider women’s often overlooked contributions as art commissioners, collectors and patrons. The presentation thus invites us to approach art history from a broader perspective: not only through artists and models, but also through commissioners, patrons and other women who shaped European art and culture.
