Concert: Architecture Meets Music

What is the sound of Kumu? How is the character of the building reflected in music? How does the interior of Kumu resonate in musical pieces? What stories does the museum tell us through sounds?
Musical duo String Together, consisting of the cellist Heini Mielonen and the pianist Antti Utriainen, will perform together with the jazz guitarist Jaan Jaanson and the drummer Ahto Abner.

They will perform music inspired by the great architecture of the Kumu Art Museum, which was designed by the Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori. This concert is a unique co-operative effort between Finnish and Estonian musicians that will bring together inspiring soundscapes and tunes in Kumu’s atrium.

Heini Mielonen (cello/vocals) is a Finnish cellist, vocalist, composer and lyricist. Currently she is composing music for the Architecture Meets Music concert series in Finland. Heini uses looper techniques and effected sounds in her cello playing and is inspired to create varied soundscapes in her compositions and playing. Her sounds are unique, wide and rich, and she is a musician who likes to live in the moment, improvising music and feelings.

Antti Utriainen (piano/synth/vocals) is a Finnish musician, specialising in piano, keyboards and organ. He excels in combining mainstream and modern jazz influences with progressive and fusion elements. He collaborates in different projects as a pianist, composer, arranger, producer and band leader. As a pianist, he has played in several jazz and rock groups, in live concerts, in studio sessions and in theatre productions.

Jaan Jaanson (guitar) is an Estonian jazz guitarist. He is part of both instrumental music groups (“Ode to the Forest”, the Jazzkaar 2022 opening concert, the Shabat Quartet, the Estonian Dream Big Band, the New Wind Jazz Orchestra etc.), and groups with vocals. Jaan graduated from the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, with a degree in music education. In 2012, he was awarded the Tiit Paulus Young Guitarist Award. In 2022, Nele-Liis Vaiksoo’s album “Light and light”, on which Jaan collaborated, received a gold record in Estonia.

Ahto Abner (drums) is an Estonian drummer. Since 2015, he has been the head of the rhythm music department at the Viljandi Culture Academy. He studied percussion at the jazz music department of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has contributed to several pop and jazz projects. He has actively toured in many countries, and has been a musician and a producer on around 90 records.
