The film was nominated for best documentary in the 2020 Goya Awards, the 2020 Feroz Awards and the 2020 José María Forqué Awards. It was the winner of the 2020 Dias de Cine Awards and the Cinema Writers Circle Awards.
‘The painting’ is a mystery documentary about Velázquez’s Las Meninas, the most widely interpreted work of art in history. ‘The painting’ places the world’s most renowned experts on Velázquez in a setting that transports them to the universe of the thriller: an interrogation room where they will unravel the keys to solving the enigma. The plot unfolds in a series of animation sequences with miniatures, which transform the interviewees into witnesses of that other world where the characters of Las Meninas come to life. A film that tries to turn the spectator into a detective, with an essential mission: to follow all the clues, listen to all the interpretations and finally find his own truth about ‘The painting’.
Screening is part of the celebration of the centennial of the diplomatic relationships between Estonia and Spain.
