Paul Delvaux. A Waking Dreamer

Location: 2nd floor, Great Hall

With the exhibition “Paul Delvaux. A Waking Dreamer” we invite you to discover the world of images created by one of the most outstanding surrealistic painters of the 20th century. The uniqueness of the artist’s oeuvre can be witnessed in his favourite subjects: women, duality, yearning for ancient times, imaginary journeys, skeletons etc. Paul Delvaux’s extraordinarily coherent imagery is a unique synthesis of motifs which had inhabited his imagination since childhood. The motifs come together to form an alternative, timeless reality, which Delvaux then carried over to his mysterious and exuberant oeuvre. The unusual, enigmatic and fascinating universe in his paintings abandons all rational and universal logic, instead offering us a key to a dreamlike poetic reality.

The unreal atmosphere and combination of seemingly unconnected iconographic elements place the artist’s work in the surrealistic spectrum. However, Delvaux is not a typical surrealist. With a few exceptions, he largely remained untouched by the activities of the surrealistic school, wishing to maintain his intellectual independence. We are undoubtedly dealing with an extraordinary person in Belgian art history, whom we can get to know a bit better at this exhibition via a thematic journey through his whole career.
