Early music ensemble Hortus Musicus. Litaeniae Sanctorum
Performed by the ensemble Hortus Musicus, artistic director Andres Mustonen.
On All Saints’ Day, the medieval litany “Litaniae Sanctorum” and the “Te Deum” by the Burgundian Renaissance composer Gilles Binchois will be performed amidst the exceptional acoustics of the St. Nicholas.
Hortus Musicus began its activities in 1972, dedicating itself to discovering and performing pre-Bach music—a genre virtually unknown at the time. The ensemble, which has been active continuously ever since, has expanded its repertoire in various directions over the years: alongside classical early music, their programs feature works by 20th- and 21st-century composers (often created specifically for Hortus Musicus) as well as traditional and folk music from exotic lands. Their performance style is characterized by a creative approach—free from clichés—to music that is distant from us in time but not in spirit. Consequently, Hortus Musicus’s concerts and recordings sound fresh, accessible, and powerful—this is living music for contemporary audiences. The 2026/2027 season marks the fifty-fifth year for the ensemble, which remains in peak form.
